Bill of Lading (BOL)

The bill of lading “BOL” is the contract between shipper and carrier, broker or agent that binds the parties together and defines all aspects of the freight shipping arrangement including what is being shipped, to whom and more.

  • Driver will receive BOL at time of pick up

  • If there are different pages of the BOL then driver needs to make sure he comes back with all three.

  • Check upper right hand corner or bottom of page for page count

  • Should be Shipper and Consignee – actually two stops on this bill of lading

  • Look for special instructions – Pieces and Weight

  • On the main page you have total pieces and total weight but on the other two pages it breaks down totals of each stop

  • Shipper should always sign off on bill of lading

  • Unloading facility should always sign that they received the product – if OS&D they need to write it on BOL

  • Freight terms on who is paying for shipment will be on BOL
